Are We A Threat To Them? |

| This is a sad reality that is happening almost everywhere. Each year, doctors who undergo training for their respective specialties would finish their residency or fellowship from the institutions where they trained. Either they go on further training abroad, taken as associates/partners by their senior consultants, absorbed by the training program or simply go back to their respective hometowns. Sad to say that there are some who go back home have a hard time establishing their practice. Its true that starting something is not easy, I agree but it becomes more difficult if there are people who serve as barriers to your start, yes, barriers...why do I say this? There are doctors, mostly of the same specialty, who would tend to block your application for practice privileges in the hospital where they are. Surprising? NO! This has been going on for quite sometime now. Some training programs even have their residents sign a waiver signifying that they would not practice in the place where they trained. Some would even dictate to you where you should practice. Foolish! Some would say that the young specialists should wait for their time to come. Well, that is just something I find really absurd. These young specialists especially the ones who trained in the bigger centers, are equipped with the theoretical and technical(for surgeons) knowhow. Now, is this fact supposed to be a threat to the older but established specialists? Of course not, once established, patients will go back to them. But the younger doctors have newer things to offer like minimally invasive procedures for the surgical specialties. Why do the older ones have to block the entry of the younger ones? Are they threatened? They shouldnt be! They are already established and already made a name for themselves. Why don't they give the younger ones a chance to start and improve. Who knows, one day, they would need the services of someone with the theoretical and technical expertise and that someone is the very person that they are blocking. |
